Clapham Journal

Family Interview: Mike and Lauren Walsh

Meet the Walsh Family!

The Walsh family began at Clapham for the 2023-2024 school year when their son entered Explorers I.

Look for them at on the next Walk to School, or Clapham event!

1. What brought you to Clapham?

Our friendship with Kolby Atchison (Clapham’s Head of School) greatly influenced our initial interest in the school. As we toured schools, Clapham’s classical approach to education set it apart from the other private Christian schools in the area. We had not experienced a classical class setting before! Seeing the students have a genuine love for learning made us realize that we want the same for our children.

2. Tell us about your family and how the two of you met.
We met on the Metra train while commuting to the city for work in the winter of 2014. We were that couple who chatted the entire ride to and from the city while others likely would have preferred some silence! We have 3 children, William (6), Elizabeth (3), Lydia (4mo). As a family, we enjoy bike rides, picnics, golfing, swimming and family vacations.

3. What does a day in the life of the Walsh family look like?
We start the day with Mike helping get the kids going before he leaves for work. William goes to full day Explorers II while Elizabeth goes to Toddlers Campus 2 days a week. Lauren is mostly home with Lydia helping run the house. After school, William and Elizabeth enjoy playing with the neighborhood friends. The evenings usually close with some reading or games before bed.
4. Is there anything you would love to learn but just haven’t found the time for?

Mike has never been much of a reader and would enjoy spending more time reading classics. As the kid’s careers at Clapham progress, it would be great to keep up with them reading the same literature they are! Lauren would love to learn to golf so she can wear cute outfits! Baking is something we’d both like to become better at and learn new recipes from different cultures.

5. What would you say to a new Clapham family to encourage them?

Clapham is a wonderful community that is like a family. The students in the class will grow close and become good friends. The teachers will know your child personally and will have a strong, Christ-centered relationship with them which will foster a love for learning.  If you are unfamiliar, or have not personally experienced a classical education, do not worry because that is us! The school provides many great resources to help build a good understanding of the principles on which Clapham is built. You’ll also learn alongside your children!

Thank you Walsh family!
