Getting to Know Dr. Jacob Andrews

Dr. Jacob Joseph Andrews is beginning his first semester as a member of Clapham’s Latin faculty this year. With a PhD in philosophy from Loyola and two MAs, Dr. Andrews is well versed in the classics and medieval philosophy, in addition to being an experienced classical educator.  Below, enjoy a glimpse of the man behind the diplomas.

Name: Jacob Joseph Andrews

Hometown? Chicago. As in, the real Chicago, not Wheaton or Naperville or whatever.

My family’s favorite museum or park: The National Museum of the US Air Force in Dayton, OH. So many cool planes and spacecraft, and it’s all free.

My favorite Chicago destination: Ghareeb Nawaz and/or Sam’s Chicken & Ribs.

If I had a morning without responsibilities, I would…

4-5AM – Prayer + Scripture memorization
5-6AM – Language study/copywork
6-7AM – Philosophy research project
7-8AM – Breakfast with family

What’s on my nightstand: J.R.R. Tolkien + Christopher Tolkien, The Return of the Shadow. It’s part of a series Christopher Tolkien did about the writing process behind the Lord of the Rings. It’s fascinating to read old versions and see how the story could have turned out- like traveling between alternate universes.

What I love about my church: Church of the Resurrection has a ministry called Thrive, a support group for special needs parents. Having kids with disabilities is very isolating- besides just not having the time and energy other people do to socialize, it’s hard to find people who can understand what you’re going through on a deep level. Our friends at Thrive have helped my wife and me through some of the darkest moments in our lives by showing us that we’re not alone.

My top three desert island books (excluding the Bible):  The Book of Common Prayer (1662), The Lord of the Rings, The Aeneid

A hobby or talent of mine that most students don’t know about: I bake bread.

Something I’m most looking forward to this year: Figuring out why Clapham students are so cool!

We’re thrilled to welcome Dr. Andrews and get to know him a little better! Take a moment to greet him at Curriculum Night and say hello.
