Morgan Robinson joined the faculty this fall as Clapham’s Science teacher.
- Tell us about your family. How did you and your husband meet?
I met my husband through a college roommate. She hosted a board game night for her group of coworkers in the English grad program, and Brodie was there! They played Catan and I shared a 10-minute looping YouTube video. We played the song from the video (not looping) at our wedding, and I still refuse to play Catan (but other board games are welcome).
The newest member of our family is our 1-year-old ball python, aptly named Turkey ❤️
- Where did you go to school? Was your journey to your major short and straight, or long and winding?
I went to Liberty University for undergrad, where I majored in Biopsychology and minored in Psychology. While I decided on this major by my first semester, my ideas for a career changed many times. I started hoping for neuroscience research, transitioned to mental health care, and finally realized my passion for teaching and applied for a MAT in STEM education. It took a few years to get here, but I’m glad I ended up in education!
- What is your favorite time of day and what makes it so?
I love 9 pm in the summer! It’s warm outside, it’s not a “productive” time, and there are fireflies. Even better if there is a farm nearby, because the smell of a cornfield after a hot day is really nice, in my opinion!
- Tell us about one of your hobbies and how you got started.
I love photography! I started with still life as a teenager, and now I have a small photography business called Copper Leaf Photography Co.! I also love birdwatching–I started that as a teenager through my local 4-H, and it’s something my husband and I love to do together. Conveniently enough, the places I like to photograph at are also usually great birdwatching spots!
- What is one of your hidden talents?
I’m actually very good at spitting watermelon seeds. I’ve earned trophies.
- Share a favorite book. Why is it a favorite? What are you currently reading?
My favorite book is Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman. It’s an excellent narrative about a teenager with schizoaffective disorder (or schizophrenia, the book avoids a diagnosis), and the use of first and second person is striking! I’m currently reading Fahrenheit 451!
- What do you most look forward to doing in your first year in Illinois?
Birdwatching! I’ve already seen my first green heron, which was on my bucket list. I’m sure there are many new “credits” ahead!
- What significant event in your past has influenced your life in a meaningful way?
Moving from my hometown in California to Virginia for school was a really big change for me, but it opened up so many doors for growth, especially spiritually. I am really thankful for how God has guided my life since stepping out into that unknown–He is faithful!
- What historical figure or fictional character would you choose to spend a day with?
I’d love to meet Einstein!
- What would we be surprised to learn about you?
I flew a plane once!
